Info: Elena is a beautiful mountain town in the countryside situated about 38km away from Veliko Tarnovo which is known for its wonderful historical monuments and most picturesque location. This lovely little town has played a significant part in the Bulgarian history, especially during the time of the Bulgarian National Revival from 18-19th century, by giving birth to some of the most prominent figures of this movement. In addition, it is abundant in unique examples of the achievements of the Bulgarian handicrafts and art from that time, very well preserved in the numerous houses – museums, built in the traditional Bulgarian style, where those important personalities from the Bulgarian history used to live. These houses and monuments, built in traditional style, will undoubtedly attract the attention of the lovers of exquisite Bulgarian properties. Some examples of fine architecture are the native house of Ilarion Makariopoloski, the Kamburov’s Inn, the Clock Tower, the house of the famous Bulgarian poet Petko.U.Todorov. Other monuments are the Raszukanovi Houses complex, which consists of five houses under one roof, and the St. Nicolas Church sunk in the ground to remain unnoticed by the Ottoman oppressors.
Not far from the town are located the St. Nicolas Wonderworker and Plakovski monasteries. The surrounding mountainous area is full of broad-leaved centuries-old trees, and the small rivers are abundant in mountain barbells, chubs, etc. Just some kilometers away, the Yovkovtsi dam lake sprawls and is an excellent invitation for the fans of fishing.
