The archaeological finds in the area of the town show that there has been continuous inhabiting of the area for over a millennium. The excavation of a prehistoric man made 'hill' in the area, found signs of human culture from 3500BC to 3100BC. Ten Thracians tombs dating from V - IV century BC, the Greek- Roman era, show how rich the area was. In the municipality there are many interesting villages, manmade 'hills' and fortresses, which attract many tourists. Eco tourism and rural tourism are a priority and many such projects are underway. The town itself offers various shops, restaurants, a church, a school, a hospital.
The town of Shumen is a road and rail center with such industries as tobacco processing, canning and brewing, furniture making, and the manufacture of enamelware. Various crafts flourish, and agricultural activity is important. The local beer is widely acclaimed. Shumen has Thracian and subsequent Roman origins and was a fortress (founded 927) during the first Bulgarian empire.
Near to the town are situated the first two Bulgarian capitals – Pliska and Veliki Preslav, and the religious center Madara. UNESCO lists the Madara Horseman as a World Heritage Site.
